OK.

My understanding is that if a package hasn't yet been modified in
unstable (which I do track), then the latest availabel *stable* version
is the default fallback.

My own sources list tracks unstable by default:

    # apt package archives

    deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian stable main

deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free

    deb-src http://http.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free
    deb-src http://http.us.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free

    deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US stable/non-US main contrib non-free
    deb-src http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US stable/non-US main contrib non-free

    # KDE Debian packages: (updated Monday December 4, 2000, KMSelf)
    # Following is primary site
deb http://kde.tdyc.com potato main crypto optional qt1apps

    # Galeon
    deb ftp://galeon.sourceforge.net/pub/galeon/nightly/debian galeon/
    deb-src ftp://galeon.sourceforge.net/pub/galeon/nightly/debian galeon/

...or is the package simply not compatible or utterly unavailable?

Cheers.
