This quote is rather misleading.  It's from the other Florian.  I said
I planned to solved this in another comment, though, but I didn'get
anywhere.

There appears to be a somewhere current distribution here:

  <https://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/utilities/metatype1/>

And the README file in metatype1-ver056.zip says:

| This is METATYPE1 package -- a tool for creating Type 1 fonts using
| METAPOST. The package belongs to public domain (no copyrights, copylefts,

So perhaps the licensing situation has been resolved.
