Yes, using geometry package and "specials" this information can be put
into the dvi format, but it is a "special" which means it can in
principle contain anything. Some specials are interpreted by some
drivers in a certain way.
Recent drivers somehow agree on how to deal with paper sizes, thus this
has been improving.
