No, I'm not sure but I've found that texlive-fonts-extra
includes some *.fd and *.sty like uesstixcal.fd, esstixcal.sty
under a directory $TEXMF/tex/latex/esstix/
so I guess traditional TeX can use them.
Now I tested with the following very simple file and I think
latex used them.
But I'm not so sure and if I'm wrong please correct me.

\usepackage{esstixcal}
\begin{document}
$\mathcal{L}$
\end{document}
