Let's assume you are a student, working on a paper. Do you think your
professor will appreciate something along the lines of "I will hand in
the paper in 12 years"?

For a system like LaTeX, if a fix doesn't come in a timeframe of
something like 4 weeks, the user reporting the bug will have found a
workaround. 

Some bugs are different, yes. But these bugs are exceptions, not the
rule.

You cannot have your cake and it eat it, too. The TeX group's BTS page is
a mess. The only way out is closing those bugs that nobody in Debian is
even intending to work on.

And taking your example from above: after 12 years, I couldn't care less
whether a bug that I reported is fixed - I have found a workaround, one
way or another.
