bad pdf page

Hi all,
If this is not the place to ask this question, please excuse me, and I 
will go away.

I have had this weird, but persistent problem for a while, on every 
system that I maintained.
And this time I had a freshly installed texlive from Debian Etch, and 
had this problem again.
So I decided to ask you for help.

That is, the latex generated dvi is ok ( I use xdvi to view it); but the 
converted pdf file is not:
the page is topped off, that is, the blank space on the top is gone, and 
even most part of the
title is also gone. I used dvipdf to convert the dvi file to pdf, and 
view the pdf file with acroread.

Any hint?
