Bug#360901: lmodern: fails on installation

I removed everything by hand, and adjusted /var/lib/dpkg/status by hand.

That's what I would say, too.

That's what I did.

I upgraded my system, then I installed lmodern, et voilà, it works...

I don't know what to say, but both
  apt-get install lmodern
and
  dpkg --purge lmodern
worked flawlessly.
