Indeed, I can reproduce this.

I don't understand what "OSF" means.
As a point of detail, LMTypewriter was not designed as a terminal font,
but as a font for printing text in a typewriter style (i.e., it was not
really designed for on-screen use, though it is now possible thanks to
FreeType).
I am reassigning this bug to gnome-control-center because:
1. I checked the typewriter entries in lmodern's defoma hints file and
I cannot see any mistake.
2. The command:
xterm -fa "LMTypewriter10:style=Regular" -fs 10
gives the expected result, i.e. LMTypewriter10 in Regular style,
not small caps.
I suspect it may be a more general GNOME issue because I see similar
problems with gucharmap (altough I seem to recall that the first time I
tried after reading this bug report, the problem wasn't there in
gucharmap... strange).
I also noticed similar problems in gnome-font-properties with LMRoman10
but the following tests with xterm are all successful, again:
% xterm -fa "LMRoman10:style=Regular" -fs 10
% xterm -fa "LMRoman10:style=CapsRegular" -fs 10
% xterm -fa "LMRoman10:style=Oblique" -fs 10
% xterm -fa "LMRoman10:style=CapsOblique" -fs 10
(though the spacing is not suitable for terminal use, which is expected
since LMRoman10 is not a fixed-width font)
Feel free to reassign the bug if you find evidence that it belongs to
lmodern. At present, I cannot find any.
Regards,
