Cannot reproduce it here. Can you please try with
sh -x texdoc pdftex-a
In my version of texdoc as (checksum
2f1f52efcbd09491bffcf1db287bf7be /usr/bin/texdoc
) I see that setupTmpDir was defined once
but was commented out. So perhaps it is not
needed... And in fact I commented out line 198 to
no apparent ill effect.
I think that compressed dvi files are treated
normally i.e, uncompressed by texdoc and then
shown. Is this the intension? And related to
this, xdvi fails with compressed files.
like here:
xdvi /usr/share/doc/texmf/latex/exam/examdoc.dvi.gz
xdvi.bin: Fatal error: Could not open `/dev/fd/3': Bad address.
