The puzzling thing is that

- updmap _is_ called in postinst, and if it would have stopped before
  that call, dpkg would have given you an error message

- updmap doesn't seem to have failed, because it would have shown up in
  the debconf-show output.

Anyway, we still have that code in our postinst scripts that only
displays a debconf note when updmap or fmtutil fail.  I have put this in
last summer in a kind of panic reaction, since we got so many RC bug
reports that took us days to track down, and finally it was always a
f**ed up user configuration.

But to be honest, I don't think that this is the way to go in the long
run.  Should we remove this right now, and revert to a failing postinst?
