It gives:

  1. Separation from teTeX (someone filed a bug report so that lmodern
     doesn't depend anymore on the tetex packages, and without the
     supposedly close release, I would have uploaded something like that
     already).

  2. X and defoma support (therefore, also fontconfig).

  3. The fonts can be updated before teTeX 4 (every time upstream
     releases new versions).

  4. You don't have to deal with its bug reports. :-)
