I did a text search through tetex-bin's sources, and there are some
possible problems:
texconfig uses TEXMFDIST to display the release file; but that is a
minor problem. texdoctk also uses it, but with --expand-path, so there
will be a list, anyway. The string doesn't seem to appear in
tetex-texmf.
