fmtutil-sys: running `pdfetex -ini -jobname=latex -progname=latex -translate-file=cp227.tcx *latex.ini' ...
+ false
+ verbose pdfetex -ini -jobname=latex -progname=latex -translate-file=cp227.tcx '*latex.ini'
+ false
+ pdfetex -ini -jobname=latex -progname=latex -translate-file=cp227.tcx '*latex.ini'
This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.141592-1.21a-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.4) (INITEX)
 (/usr/share/texmf/web2c/cp227.tcx)

In other words, this time it worked. It seems you were running the
commands in different "environments". This could mean: once as root,
once as ordinary user; or it could mean that you used different ways to
get root (like sudo vs. su, or "su -", or a login on a terminal).

Any ideas?
