Downgrades are generally not supported. You should completely purge the
tetex packages and install on a clean system.

This is strange.

It should be a symlink to etex (in 2.0.2; in 3.0 it's a symlink to
pdfetex), and it should work with that.

Have you also purged tex-common? If not, please purge all four packages
(tetex-* and tex-common) and then install tetex- again. If you get an
error from the postinst, please report the output and send the temporary
file indicated in it. If the packages install without an error, but you
still cannot run latex, please send us the output of
kpsewhich latex.fmt
