Thank you. And now, what happens if you do (as root)

update-fmtutil -v
egrep '^TEXMF |^VARTEXMF' /etc/texmf/texmf.cnf

and if there's a VARTEXMF now, you can run "dpkg --configure -a" and
get a working tetex-bin, but I fear this will not happen.
