Bug#193444: [Walter Schmidt] Re: psnfss/3670: helvetica produces dollar signs instead of \textsterling
tags 193444 wontfix
thanks
Hi Matt,
Please see the attached explanation by Walter Schmid, psnfss
maintainer. I guess that, under these circumstances, you won't do the
effort of fixing this properly - Walter says it isn't worth it, and the
teTeX maintainers team for sure won't have time. Therefore I'm tagging
this wontfix.

This is a known bug, which occurs with the obsolete OT1 encoding
only. See the PSNFSS test file test0.tex, section "OT1 encoding".
In general, PostScript fonts from the non-TeX world should _not_
be used with the obsolete OT1 encoding. This is pointed out in
the PSNFSS documentation. Fixing the bug is not worth the effort,
IMHO, since the OT1 encoding has many further drawbacks.

No, I won't do that! To short-circuit the NFSS can never be a
good idea!
(A viable solution would be to provide different virtual fonts
for the slanted and italic shapes; the further with a pounds glyph
and the latter with a sterling in it. However, I don't think it's
worth the effort.)

As far as the fonts from the PSNFSS system are concerned, the
problem occurs also with Courier and AvantGarde, which have no
particular italic shape where the \pounds can reside.
