You've sid installed. Fine. tetex-base (2.x) contains a LaTeX release
as of June 2001. Hence the question: Where does that very old
LaTeX-relase come from? In /var/lib/texmf/web2c should be a file
latex.log. Would you be so kind to send it into the bug report?
It could also be in /tmp/fmtutil.$number/ if fmtutil failed.
