Bug#175239: efax no longer understands dvi2fax' output

you could try with "strings".

Probably that efax is buggy.

This efax is strange. Here it always complains about not finding
/dev/modem, irrespective of what I put into /etc/efaxrc.

woody-bunk2 plus lots of backports.
