You're right; maybe I should have suggested /var/lib/tetex-debian/ or
/var/lib/tetex/debian/.

OK.
So, we have several possibilities:
(1) use /var/lib/tetex/{debian-foo,debian-bar,etc.}
(2) use /var/lib/tetex-debian/{foo,bar,etc.}
(3) use /var/lib/tetex/debian/{foo,bar,etc.}
(4) use /var/lib/tetex without any debian identifier, running the
small risk of future clashes with upstream stuff
My favourite ones are 2 and 3, but I can be easily convinced for
others...
