Another could be:

\documentclass[12pt]{letter}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\begin{document}
test
\end{document}

You just have to use fonts, which are not available as PS-Type1. As
you might have noticed, I've posted already two proposals for a
solution into that bug. Unfortunately I have no clue, whom I should
forward it to. Karl Berry, cause he created modes.mf? Timothy Van
Zandt, cause he created config.pdf?
