No; I don't have TMPDIR set at all. (I had TMP set, but unsetting it
had no effect on the problem.)
After investigating further, I believe the fix is to add
DIR => File::Spec->tmpdir,
to the argument list of tempfile. I don't know why things work for you.
(Just to make sure, the problem occurs when the current directory is
unwritable.)
