Package: tetex-base
Version: 1.0-8
Severity: normal

Compiling the gray font with the standard setup gets the graycx font, which
gives the error message

l.4 ...>cx: errmessage "This file is for cx only";

since the default mode is ljfour. Changing gray.mf to read

lilac:/usr/share/texmf/fonts/source/public/misc# cat gray.mf
input graylj % the `standard' gray font is for the laserjet

fixes the problem.

Yes, /usr/share/texmf/fonts/source/public/misc/gray.mf now seems to have
the correct solution of actually looking at the mode.
