Ah! Your guess of the problem is right: I had added

    Map arphic.map

to /etc/texmf/updmap.cfg. If I remove this line and rerun updmap,
then xdvi works again on my Chinese documents. However, I want
pdftex to look at arphic.map. Should I add "map +arphic.map" to
/etc/texmf/pdftex/pdftex.cfg, or is there a better way?

Thank you,
	Ken
