Dear pdftex folks,

we (the maintainers of the tetex package within the Debian/GNU Linux
distribution) think we have found a bug in pdflatex. (Looking at the
pdftex mailing list archives, I should have put the title differently:
"pdflatex does _not_ produce ugly fonts"...) Please keep the Cc: - I
don't want to receive the answers privately, but I think it's not good
(and I am not entitled to) to subscribe a mailing list to a mailing
list.=20

Let me first explain the circumstances:

If you install the tipa bundle (fonts and sty, using make install), the
respective map file is only copied to /etc/texmf/dvips, but is is not
included in the updmap.cfg file. In tetex, this file is used by pdftex
and other programs to find fonts. Therefore pdflatex cannot find the
type1 tipa fonts that are on the system. Now, when the following
document is run through latex and the dvi file through dvips:

\documentclass{minimal}
\usepackage{tipa}
\begin{document}
\textvbaraccent{a}
\end{document}

then dvips will generate the necessary font metrics by invoking
metafont:

kpathsea: Running mktexpk --mfmode ljfour --bdpi 600 --mag 1+0/600 --dpi 60=
0 tipa10
mktexpk: Running mf-nowin -progname=3Dmf \mode:=3Dljfour; mag:=3D1+0/600; n=
onstopmode; input tipa10

[...]
Font metrics written on tipa10.tfm.
Output written on tipa10.600gf (256 characters, 39376 bytes).
Transcript written on tipa10.log.
mktexpk: /var/cache/fonts/pk/ljfour/fkr/tipa/tipa10.600pk: successfully gen=
erated.

However, when the document is run through pdflatex _before_ dvips
created its files, then pdflatex does _not_ create the necessary files,
but simply issues a warning:

Warning: pdflatex (file tipa10): Font tipa10 at 600 not found

and creates an insane pdf:

- it displays the letter "a" without an accent
- it crashes gv and pdffonts=20

Once dvips has done its work once, pdflatex will use the bitmap fonts
and produce correct output.

I think this is a bug, because shouldn't pdflatex mimic as good as
possible the behavior of latex together with a dvi printer driver like
dvips? And it shouldn't depend on dvips, either. Bitmap fonts are better
than wrong glyphs, I'd say.

Thank you,=20
Frank
