I believe this is the essential problem.
Generally, it was not necessary (or even dangerous) to purge
a package to fix an ordinary bug.
You should recover lost map files with re-installing
tetex-base.
Please try "dpkg -i --force-confmiss tetex-base_2.0.1-2.deb"
(Of course you need to get tetex-base_2.0.1-2.deb first)
