Bug#181932: tetex-extra: g-brief doesn't work and is possibly non-free
Package: tetex-extra
Version: 2.0.1-1
Severity: normal
[Should probably be raised to serious if there are really licensing
issues.]
Hi,
the g-brief package completely fails to work:
> (/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/g-brief/g-brief.cls
> Document Class: g-brief 2002/02/16 v3.0 g-brief class
> (/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/base/letter.cls
> Document Class: letter 1999/04/29 v1.2z Standard LaTeX document class
> (/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/base/size11.clo))
> (/usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/babel/babel.sty
> (/usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/babel/ngermanb.ldf
> (/usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/babel/babel.def)))
> (/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/base/inputenc.sty
> (/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/base/latin9.def))

This is because europs.sty isn't shipped, presumably because of
licensing issues. Now I was going to suggest to simply comment out or
remove the loading of europs (g-brief works perfectly fine without it,
no idea why it wants it at all), when I noticed this:
%% You are not allowed to change this file. You may however copy this file
%% to a file with a different name and then change the copy.
which certainly makes fixing this a little difficult. Also I have to
wonder if this sort of thing is really still covered by DFSG 4. But even
if you are willing to accept this, it goes on to say:
%% You are NOT ALLOWED to distribute this file alone. You are NOT ALLOWED
%% to take money for the distribution or use of this file (or a changed
%% version) except for a nominal charge for copying etc.
I think you'll have a hard time to convince anyone that this is Free...
If this is really still the license of g-brief it will have to be
removed. Otherwise the licensing information should be updated and the
europs requirement removed.
