dvips fails for a large .dvi file

dvips fails to produce postscript output from a large .dvi files (e.g. book, 
1000+ pages). This is something we have routinely done on different RedHat 
7.x boxes for a couple of years now, so I am pretty sure it is some Debian 
specific issue. To be able to produce such a large .dvi file I had to change 
default settings in /etc/texmf/texmf.cnf so that:
hash_extra = 50000
pool_size = 1250000
All other configuration files are Debian default. I would certainly 
appreciate any suggestions from people on the mailing list. Below is the 
error message I get:

I am using Debian 3.0 with all updates. Below are kernel and glibc versions:
kernel-image-2.4.18-686-smp version: 2.4.18-5
libc6 2.2.5-11.2
