Package: tetex-extra
Version: 1.0-4

=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

Here is the story, in short:

This started out as a bug report for Package jadetex, Version 2.7-1 .

The installation of that package broke in its post-install.

The reason: After an installation of tetex-extra that had
happened immediately before, pdflatex would no longer run.
I could reproduce that problem on the command line.

I probed around a bit and found that some of the .fmt files
in /usr/share/texmf/web2c were still left in the old
versions. (See dir-listing below.)

So I moved away all *.fmt and also some other *fmt files,
and rerun

   tetex-extra.postinst configure

That indeed helped. Afterwards, pdftex and pdflatex would
both run.

And indeed, so would, finally,

   apt-get install jadetex

=2E

Incidently, I run a "version-is-a-moving-target" Debian-i386
system on a AMD-K6 PR200.

This may be all you need to read.

Just in case, more details follow.

=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

Here is the dir listing of /usr/share/texmf/web2c
after the "successful" installation of tetex-extra,
showing old, worn-out .fmt - files.

Here is what I did that got me into trouble in the first place:

(with cut&paste from an xterm, I'm systematically missing
two characters from each line that wrapped around, for
complicated reasons independent of this bug report)

This is pdfTeX, Version 3.14159-13d (Web2C 7.3.1) (INITEX)
(Fatal format file error; I'm stymied)

That problem was reproducible:

bash-2.02$ echo '\relax' | pdftex
This is pdfTeX, Version 3.14159-13d (Web2C 7.3.1)
**(Fatal format file error; I'm stymied)

An experiment with
   echo '\relax' | strace pdftex
then got me on the right track.

I found out what had gone wrong and was able to fix it,
as reported above.

Description:
tetex-base - basic teTeX library files
 tetex-doc - teTeX documentation
tetex-extra - extra teTeX library files
Closes: 45930 62539 70581 95995 111561 139298 143751 170382 173872
Changes:
 tetex-base (1.0.2+20021025-4) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Added note for tetex maintainers about how to create orig.tar.gz
This is irrelevant for users but might be helpful for maintainers
     cooperation. [kohda]
   * Now postinst and tetex-extra.postinst checked the existence of
/etc/texmf/fmtutil.cnf" before running "texconfig init". [kohda]
     (Closes: #62539)
   * Now updmap.cfg is not a conffile but a configuration file generated by
     update-updmap of tetex-bin. [kohda] (Closes: #70581)
   * Found extsizes was included. [kohda] (Closes: #111561)
   * Removed unnecessary /etc/X11/Xresources from dirs. [kohda]
   * Moved eurosym and texdoctk stuffs in tetex-extra so modified dependency
     correspondingly. [kohda] (Closes: #173872, #170382)
   * Moved pdftex/pdflatex stuffs in tetex-base so now pdftex/pdflatex
     should work without tetex-extra. [kohda]
     (Closes: #143751, #95995, #139298)
   * Removed FMT files when tetex-extra would be removed. Note, obsolete
omaga.fmt and lambda.fmt would be removed with preinst of tetex-bin.
     [kohda] (Closes: #45930)
   * Fixed handling way of psfonts.map pdftex.map ; first removed
obsolete wrong files if any in preinst and set them up correctly in
     postinst. [kohda]
   * Tried to remove obsolete conffiles with debconf. [kohda]
   * Fixed handling of /usr/share/texmf/doc in rules; in the former version
symlinks were messed up. In this time, they would be corrected and #170592
     should be fixed really.
