I guess it was autogenerated, since I now have also a source and tfm
dirs, as you can see:
dellaved@st-dellaved:/var$ ls -lpa /var/cache/fonts/

Since the permissions have changed (755->777) the newer version of
tetex-* probably have fixed the problem.
