You are using EC fonts. Those are different from Computer Modern,
and they do not come with Type 1 versions.
You have a few options:
\usepackage{ae}
will do some trickery to use CM fonts for EC characters, though
searching characters with accents won't work.
\usepackage{pslatex}
will use Times, Helvetica and Courier fonts wherever possible.
You can also get the CM super fonts, which have Type 1 versions of
the EC fonts. AFAIK, they haven't been packaged for debian, though
you can get them from
http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/ps-type1/cm-super/
Hmmm... I wonder if they're on TeX Live 7? I should probably install
it and give it a try.
