Note that the above messages said that dvi2ps tried
to create PK fonts.

Well, these are NOT PK fonts as the names tells so ;-)

It was a bug ot tetex but now fixed already (cf. #134186)
but you can set up for dvi2ps to use type1 fonts,
please see /etc/texmf/dvi2ps/fontdesc
(uncomment the line "#fontdesc //fonts$kpse/fonts-psf")
Anyway I will close the bug soon.
