OK, but which packages were upgraded during that
ritual "apt-get update ; apt-get upgrade" ?
Was tetex-bin among these packages?

If you have the time: downgrade tetex-bin and tetex-base, without
touching jadetex and tell us, if jadetex still works. Then type
/var/lib/dpkg/info/jadetex.postinst configure
and try again.
