Please share with us, which version of xfree86 (xlibs, xlib6g ...) you
have installed. 

Also please do:

ls -l /etc/X11/app-defaults/XDvi /usr/share/texmf/xdvi/XDvi

This should give you:

-rw-r--r--    1 root     root          126 Feb 13  1999 /etc/X11/app-defaults/XDvi
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           26 Aug 24 15:00 /usr/share/texmf/xdvi/XDvi -> /etc/X11/app-defaults/XDvi
