Check out /usr/bin/see (which is a symlink to /usr/bin/run-mailcap)
from the mime-support package. Among other things, it can be used to
see gzipped DVI files:

     see /usr/share/doc/texmf/latex/tools/calc.dvi.gz

uncompresses calc.dvi.gz and runs xdvi for displaying the file.

It would be nice to have all Documentation in PostScript, but then
again this would probably consume the diskspace again which was
formerly saved by gzipping the DVI files for this very purpose. I'd
rather prefer to have more diskspace instead and manually run dvips on
a needed file once in a while...
