Hi, Sander.
> I've used teTeX to write my thesis, so at one time it worked. I did not update my teTeX system for a while (because the downloads were huge). Later, i tried updating, but this failed. I purged all off teTeX from my system and tried i fresh install, but this failed too.
I see. Did you really do 'dpkg --purge tetex-*' instead of
only 'dpkg --remove tetex-*'?
texmf.cnf is conffiles so only removing might cause trouble.
And is there /usr/lib/texmf or something in your system?
> So, i didn't set the TEXMF envvar, because before installing teTeX i didn't have teTeX :)
Well, it is another story if you set TEXMF or not, and if you installed
tetex-* packages or not. Please check 'env | grep TEX'.

Yes, yes and I can not guess what happened really to you well.
I only pointed some possibilities and they might be irrelevant.
