That *was* the case, yes. It seems that package changes in the archive
since last month have changed things. Following the same process
including the purge works correctly up until I get a failure to
upgrade live-build due to bugs in that package. See the typescript of
the upgrade (test-with-purge.gz). If I restore the VM image, start
again and remove the live-tools package along with x11-common libx11-6
libx11-data, all works flawlessly in one step.
