Thanks for the tip. I have been able to resolve the boot problem.
After booting the LinuxOLD image, and then running LILO again,
I had no problems booting the Linux image.

The only strange thing that remains is that since the last update
the console size is much smaller (but sharper). Instead of taking
up the whole screen, it now takes up only the center half.
