"./MAKEDEV md" will not work with udev afaik.  If the kernel does not
recognise the partition on bootup as RAID it probably is the wrong
partition type.  Check with fdisk wether it is "Linux raid autodetect"
(Id: fd) and change it if necessary.

That's the only thing I can think of for now tho.  But I can tell you
that it does work.  I have installed a machine with stock kernel and
software RAID1 with the sarge installer and it did work fine after
some fiddling.  I don't remember the fine things anymore, but do
remember I was impressed with the sarge installation.
