AH !!  Cracked it :))

Thanks ever so much for everyones help :)  The answer was to edit 
these two lines in /home/user/.xmms/Plugins

output_plugin=/home/user/.xmms/Plugins/libALSA.so
pcm_device=hw:1,0


and change them to this.   Right, I can get back to my Mozart's horn 
concerto in E flat K 495 allegro moderato now :)
