Mouse faster in kernel 2.6.x ?

With kernel 2.6.8-1 the mouse in X11 ( gnome ) is much
faster than with kernel 2.4.<the one that comes with sarge>.

So if I boot into another kernel, I must adjust each time the
mouse pointer speed.

Is this correct behavior ? Looks suspicious to me.
