A couple of shots in the dark:
1. Is your loopback interface working properly? (Can you ping 127.0.0.1?)
2. Have you tried deleting your gnome config files? (Or rather, move them
to some sub-directory. E.g. "mkdir BAD-CONFIG; mv .gnome* .gconf*
BAD-CONFIG".)
