I had this exact same issue. However I was tweaking my system and messing
with the frame buffer device settings for X *and* console... font-servers
and settings as well. Somewhere in the process of mucking with things I
inadvertantly made the square block go away permenantly.
This probably isn't much help, as I wasn't trying to solve the cursor
issue at the time. But maybe it is related to the fbdev or font services.
