Bug#197043: Misleading instructions for upgrade to woody

Package: installation-reports
Version: N/A; reported 2003-06-11
Severity: important

When upgrading from potato (Debian v2.2r0) to woody (Debian 3.0r1) and exactly following the instructions on this page:

http://www.debian.org/releases/woody/i386/release-notes/ch-upgrading.en.html

... then X will not work after the upgrade. The relevant line in the transcript is this:

Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

I suggest that these instructions:

> If you were upgrading from Debian version 2.0 or earlier, and have the
> X Window System installed, give the following commands:
>
> apt-get remove xbase
> apt-get install xfonts-base xfonts-75dpi xfonts-100dpi xfonts-scalable

be changed to read: "If you were upgrading from Debian version 2.2 or earlier"

Following the instructions during an upgrade from potato fixes the problem, and X starts working again.
