Remember that you have to run lilo from chroot /target. It should be
root=/dev/hda1.

There are kernel images both in base and in d-i. I guess it's one from
base you're talking about? It also has to be installed in chroot
/target.

discover and isa is a guess, look at its homepage.

I don't give a damn about bochs slowness. Bochs *IS* slow. Get over it.

If you desperately want this, file a bug on anna, it's what installs the
udebs. I think it might be hard to implement both the choice and
newbie-friendliness automation.

The /target debconf database is pre-initialized with values from d-i.
But it should definitely be 'medium' if you chose medium when
configuring cdebconf. However, if you don't remember exactly what you
did, some things may very well have been screwed up. :)
