Base System Installation Checklist:

Initial boot worked: [O]
Configure network HW: [O/E]
Config network: [O/E]
Detect CD: [O]
Load installer modules: [O]
Detect hard drives: [O]
Partition hard drives: [O]
Create file systems: [O/E]
Mount partitions: [O]
Install base system: [E]
Install boot loader: [E]
Reboot: [O]
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Comments/Problems:
Network: appeared to configure well on the initial install so [O]
- on reboot, no module inserted for my card (3Com 3C900) which had
been correctly detected - so no network, so no working apt-get. [E].
Stanza for the card had been correctly configured in /etc/network/interfaces.

File systems: Appeared to create correct partitions on initial install as
ext3 [O] but no journal created, so not ext3 on reboot [E]. Not an enormous
problem. As part of this, I used the "unsafe" auto partitioning. I was
surprised that it didn't touch the second disk at all.

Install base system: kernel failed at 50% - having read Tom V.'s very similar
comment, I was able to manually mount the CD-ROM (mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdd
/cdrom) - no /target here - and do an apt-get -f install which fixed this. The
next pass through installed the kernel.

Boot loader - caused in part by the kernel install error, it fixed when the
kernel install fixed.

No configured hostname correct - left as localhost

No correct keyboard - left with US and can't reconfigure with dpkg-reconfigure
console-common - left with message

Looking for keymap to install:

Warning cannot access console;
  deferring until console is accessible.

no /dev/cdrom available as configured {B-(

<Description of the install, in prose, and any thoughts, comments
and ideas you had during the initial install.>

Good install process over all. Hardware detection was relatively OK.
Too many modules to select as extras should you wish it.

Some dialogue boxes seemed a fraction oversized.

This is my most capable machine so has stuff like the TV card :)

All in all, it bodes well for the future :)
