Upgrade Potato to Woody (3.0)

Dear all,

/usr/bin/update-menus

creates a segmentation fault. So, I cannot install anything further. 
Re-installing menu_2.1.5-10.1_i386.deb has not helped either.  I
re-installed perl etc.  But no success.  

Can anyone give me any hint?  Thanks in advance,
