odd networking bug (libc6) after upgrading to woody

After upgrading from potato to woody (but not upgrading my
self-compiled 2.2.19 kernel) printing to a remote printer
stopped working. It reports "waiting for queue to be
enabled" and a nonsensical error message, "remotehost:
/usr/sbin/lpd: otherhost", where "remotehost" is the
expected remote host with the printer and "otherhost" is
another host on the network. (Incidentally, otherhost is
running potato and printing to remotehost still works, while
remotehost is running older lpr software.) Switching to
lprng gives a similar error message, and downgrading to lpr
gives the same error message, and get this: when I remove
lpr* (stopping the daemon, I guess) my controlling ssh
connection is dropped! But not other ssh connections.

Compiling a fresh stock 2.2.20 kernel doesn't help.
