I am using Sawfish and Gnome here and don't have any problems. Here is
what I did:

1. First of all d/l and install the "Sawfish-gnome" package if you have
not already done this. This is a different package from the "Sawfish"
package. BTW, both of these are ONLY available in Woody or SID. The
equivalent packages in Potato is "Sawmill" and "Sawmill-gnome".

2. Crank up Gnome and select the Gnome Configuration Tool (the toolbox
icon on the panel).

3. Select "Window Manager" under the "Desktop". This should give you a
listing of all your window managers available. You should see "Sawfish"
listed there. If it isn't then something is wrong. One of them should
be listed as (current).

4. Select "Sawfish" if it is NOT the "current" WM and then hit the
"Try" button. If it comes up, then hit "OK". and save the config when
asked.

5. You should now be able to run the "Sawfish Configuration Tool" from
the button at the bottom of the window.
