Hmmm, not sure if it's related or not, but I had a font related problem
recently, which made gtk programs spontaneously segfault for no apprarent
reason: as it turned out my fontpaths were commented out when they
shouldn't have been for some reason.

I'm not sure of the cause of this -- whether it's my fault, xbase's,
or something else entirely.

Check /etc/X11/XF86Config for lines like:

    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/"

...and check that they aren't commented out.

Cheers,
aj
