[OT] scanner recommendations

Hi

This might be slightly OT. Please forgive, but I thought this could also
give some new life to this otherwise pretty silent list.

I consider buying a new scanner. But I'm a bit lost with the huge amount
of available devices and the also rather long list of supported and
unspported devices for SANE. So I'm looking for recommendations of
scanners known to work well with linux and of good quality.

My requirements:

-> ~A4 size
-> USB or Ethernet connection (don't know if Ethernet scanners really
   exist, but this would be nice)
-> free (as in freedom) drivers, if the driver is in Debian lenny this
   is a plus, but not a must
-> reasonable quality
-> not too expensive
